A Return to the Word

When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes. And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Micaiah, and Shaphan the secretary, and Asaiah the king's servant, saying, “Go, inquire of the Lord for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the Lord that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us.”
—2 Kings 22:11-13

The Reformers placed the Word of God above everything else. The word of God reveals Jesus to us, and therefore the word of God should be given the highest priority. In this message, Ps Jon Laurenzo continues our All Saints series and gives us three reasons why we should build the foundation of our lives on the Word of God.

The church loses its way when it loses the Word.

  • Josiah and the nation of Israel had completely rejected God.
  • No matter who your parents are, you choose whether or not to follow God. You get to decide what legacy you leave on this earth.
  • Church activity is possible without the Word. You can show up to church without the Word at the center of your life.
  • When you get the Word activated in your life, Christianity can no longer be a surface level thing.

Spiritual maturity requires me to diagnose my decision making and worldview.

  • Until you decide that something has to change about your life, it is not active faith.
  • We can’t let emotions guide our lives. Our foundation has to be Scripture, because everything we feel might be real but everything we feel might not be true.
  • We can’t take a passive position in these battles. We must take every thought captive and surrender them to Christ.

The power of the Word is in the application.

  • Josiah hears the book of the Law preached and puts it into action by enacting reforms.
  • Ask yourself, “How will I be different today because of what I just read?”
  • We are called to be not just hearers of the Word but doers of the Word.
