Surrender to Love

It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.
Luke 23:44-46

In this Sunday’s message, we’re confronted with the reality that surrender is not partial but whole. Pastor Jon Tyson teaches us that God isn’t interested in half-offerings or religious performance, He wants our trust. We can’t surrender in our own willpower or grit. We have to know there’s a God who sees everything, and when He calls you to surrender, He isn’t punishing you, He’s leading you to what is for you.

Our Loss Of Trust

  • Seasons of waiting show how quickly we doubt God’s provision.
  • Complaints reveal unbelief or rebellion in our hearts.
  • Fear replaces trust when we try to control outcomes.
  • Doubt grows when we cannot see God’s work.

Control Freaks

  • We try to force God’s timing instead of waiting patiently.
  • Anxiety grows when events don’t happen according to our schedule.
  • Attempting to manipulate outcomes through our own effort.
  • We miss lessons God is teaching in the waiting.

Control: Timing Of Our Lives, How We Obey God, Others and God

  • Expecting God or others to act according to our plan or schedule.
  • Frustration arises when events or people don’t align with our timeline.
  • Attempting to force obedience or results through personal effort.
  • Limiting God’s work or our growth by holding on to control.

From Control To Surrender

  • Freedom comes from letting go of our need to control.
  • Healing begins when we stop fighting the battles ourselves.
  • Surrender allows God to work beyond our understanding.
  • Trust replaces anxiety when we release control.

Jesus, His Father, Surrender

  • Exemplifies ultimate surrender through full obedience.
  • Trust louder than temptation, fear, or uncertainty.
  • Surrender is relational, trusting God with everything.
  • Leads to freedom and alignment with God’s purposes.

With A Loud Voice

  • Jesus declared surrender aloud, showing courage.
  • Bold trust, not quiet submission, signals release of control.
  • Speaking surrender strengthens faith.
  • A loud voice affirms reliance on God, not self.

Surrender: Our Future, Our Shame, Our Will

  • Future: Letting go of personal plans, expectations, and fears.
  • Shame: Bringing failures and mistakes to God instead of hiding them.
  • Will: Complete obedience, even when uncomfortable.

The Trapeze

  • Surrender is like stepping off a trapeze; you let go of control, trusting God to catch you.
  • Freedom comes not from holding on tightly, but from releasing fully and relying on His presence.

Father “Into Your Hands I Commit My ___________”

  • Surrender is an intentional act of giving God your life, heart, and future.
  • It brings peace and rest, showing trust in His hands to hold what you cannot.
  • Following Jesus’ example demonstrates complete, courageous release.

Discussion Questions

  • In what areas of your life do you struggle to fully trust God instead of trying to control timing, obedience, others, or even Him?
  • Where have you been holding onto shame, your will, or personal plans instead of surrendering them to God?
  • How does Jesus’ example of surrender challenge the ways you obey or hold back from God?
  • What does it look like for you to release control and step into relational surrender with God this week?
  • How can you bring your failures, fears, or past mistakes to God and choose His plan over your own?
