Knowing God By Waiting On Him

"And the Lord said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: You saw for yourselves that I spoke to you from heaven. Remember, you must not make any idols of silver or gold to rival me." Exodus 20:22–23

Waiting seasons reveal what we truly believe about God. Israel's impatience led them to create a counterfeit image of God because they were unwilling to trust His timing. Rather than waiting for the Lord to speak, they took control and fashioned a god that reflected their own desires. Like Israel, we can settle for counterfeits when we allow impatience to lead us instead of trust. The invitation in every waiting season is not simply to wait for an answer, but to know God more deeply. As we behold Him through His Word, we are transformed into His image.

1. God is Lord & King

God reigns over all creation and His Kingdom operates differently than the kingdoms of this world. His thoughts, His ways, and His timing are higher than our own. Waiting teaches us to surrender our perspective and learn to live according to His Kingdom rather than the patterns of the world.

Trust God's rule even when you do not understand His timing.

2. God Speaks

Waiting is not passive. It is an active pursuit of God's voice through Scripture, prayer, and meditation. Even when God seems silent, He is still working behind the scenes. Just as He continued speaking to Moses while Israel waited, God continues to speak to His people today through His Word.

Don't mistake God's silence for His absence. Continue seeking Him while you wait.

3. God is Love

The greatest demonstration of God's love has already been given through Jesus Christ. If God was willing to give His Son for our salvation, we can trust Him with every other promise and every unanswered prayer. His love gives us confidence to wait faithfully rather than pursue counterfeits.

Remember what God has already done so you can trust Him with what He has yet to do.

4. Godliness

Our response to God's character is a life of trust, obedience, worship, prayer, submission, and service. Godliness is not about trying harder through human effort. It is the result of continually beholding Christ and allowing the Holy Spirit to transform us.

The goal of waiting is not simply to receive what God has promised, but to become more like Jesus in the process.

2. Aaron built the golden calf using the melted gold earrings of the Israelites from Egypt. As Christians, what ideologies and philosophies do we try and mix with our Christian beliefs?
3. Waiting on God isn't passive — it's actively meditating on what He has already spoken. From the message, which aspects of God's nature and character do you most need to focus on and understand more deeply in this season? Why that one?
